Ian Bruce is a well-renowned Canadian creator. His reputation as a boatbuilder is well established, and he is also recognized as a water sports champion. Ian is an industrial designer who has worked mostly in the production category of recreational boats. He is also the co-creator of the world spread monotype centreboarder “LASER” famous for its simplicity, sturdiness and high performance. The “LASER” was created in 1970. It is yet unchanged and still showing great popularity.
Regattas champion, he won twice the Prince of Wales trophy of the INTERNATIONAL Fourteens (Class 14) and he represented his country twice for the Olympic games played in FINN (Naples) and STAR (Keel).
For 40 years, he either solely created or he contributed to the creation, the development and the building of international classes or acknowledges classes such as: Finn, Quatorze, Contender, Laser, Optimist, Fireball, 470, Laser II, Tasar, Laser Radial, Byte and 29er.
Recently (in 2009), he has been designated by the Order of Canada, the most distinctive and outstanding acknowledgment of our honour system. The award was in recognition of his contribution to sailing (within Canada and abroad) but it was mostly in recognition of his contribution to the improvement of high performance boats conception and development.
